WASHINGTON, July 12, 2012 — The stain of shame now contaminates every corner of Penn State. There is no escaping the rampant cover up of the actions of pedophile coach Jerry Sandusky that endangered young boys who came in contact with him.
The college’s own internal report, written by former FBI Director Louis Freeh, was released this morning by Director Freeh, verifing that top Penn State administrators and Coach Joe Paterno knew of the complaints about Sandusky’s encounter with young boys but chose to do nothing.
The investigation finds “the total disregard for the safety and welfare of Sandusky’s child victims by the most senior leaders at Penn State.” It condemns the inaction of Coach Paterno who “At the very least…could have alerted the entire football staff in order to prevent Sandusky from bringing another child into the Lasch Building.”
The report goes on to say that Penn State leaders (Penn President GrahamSpanier, former vice-president Gary Schultz, Paterno, and Athletic Director Tim Curley) repeatedly concealed critical facts to Sandusky’s child abuse from the authorities, the Board of Trustees, Penn State community and the public at large. Although concern to treat the child abuser [Sandusky] humanely was expressly stated, no such sentiments were ever expressed by them for Sandusky’s victims.”
Penn State made this announcement in response to the Freeh report:
“Today with the report released by Judge Louis Freeh, the Penn State Board of Trustees delivered on the commitment we made last November when we engaged Judge Freeh to conduct an independent investigation into the University’s actions regarding former Penn State employee, Jerry Sandusky, and the handling of allegations of the child abuse crimes of which he has since been found guilty.
“As we anticipate the review and approval process will take some time, our initial response and immediate next steps will be presented at 3:30 p.m. at the Dayton/Taylor Conference Room at the Hilton Scranton & Conference Center.”
